WTTC hosts event on sustainable tourism

14-09-22

The meeting, entitled "Nature Positive Approach to Net-Zero - Travel & Tourism", aims to call on governments and the travel and tourism industry to contribute to slowing the deterioration of the planet, preventing biodiversity loss and taking action on climate change.

The event will take place during climate week in New York and will be led by Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC, and will be attended by former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

For Simpson, the travel and tourism sector must take "urgent" action to control biodiversity loss and reduce the impact on the planet. "This requires coordination between the public and private sectors to generate initiatives based on sustainable tourism," he emphasised.

In this sense, he stressed that the sector has a key role to play in generating, promoting and acting in favour of nature and biodiversity: "We are in a unique position for businesses and visitors to act as stewards of our beautiful planet. Travellers are not just about leaving a lighter footprint; they want to have a net positive effect when they visit a destination".

Ultimately, it is about the industry playing a role by leading by example and adopting a positive nature approach.

Last year, WTTC announced the launch of its Net Zero roadmap for the travel and tourism sector to support the industry in the fight against climate change, as well as innovative social and environmental research data as part of its annual Economic Impact Report (EIR).

The "Nature Positive Approach to Net-Zero - Travel & Tourism" forum will be held at The Nest Summit Campus, located at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Expansion building
