Booking.com launches new Sustainable Travel ratings on the initiative's first anniversary
17-11-22
Booking.com today announced a number of new product features to celebrate the first anniversary of its Sustainable Travel programme, launched in 2021 to provide travellers with transparent and reliable information to enable them to make more planet-conscious choices.
The company is implementing a 3-tier rating to further recognise the efforts of those accommodations that operate more sustainably, providing travellers with useful information to plan their trips.
This new ranking is designed to show more clearly how accommodations are progressing in terms of sustainability, as well as the specific measures they are implementing.
The aim of this structure is also to highlight those accommodations that have made significant commitments and investments to achieve one of the 40 existing ecolabels and certifications.
With the introduction of these new levels, Booking.com now has more than 400,000 accommodations, including 23,650 in Spain, that are recognised for their efforts to operate more sustainably.
The new ratings have already been communicated to the company's partners around the world and will begin to appear on the Booking.com website and app in the coming weeks, with renewed visual elements to clearly distinguish these new levels.
New filters for hybrid and electric rental cars
Booking.com's website and app now feature the new search filter for electric and hybrid rental cars, making it easier for travellers to find more sustainable transport options for their next road trip, available in 60 countries.
Carbon reporting for accommodation and flights
As part of Booking.com's new partnership with climate technology company CHOOOSE, carbon emissions data for accommodation bookings in Europe will appear on the platform for the first time, with the aim of understanding where and how to present this information so that it is useful for travellers in their decision-making process.
The aim is also to explore how to better integrate carbon offsetting options into the booking process in a seamless and understandable way.
Similarly, together with CHOOOSE and following the aviation collaboration framework developed with the Travalyst coalition, Booking.com will start providing information on the carbon emissions of flights offered on the platform.
The total carbon footprint of flights will start to be displayed on the flight details page in the coming weeks and in 2023 the option to sort searches based on this data will be introduced.
