Unesco Green Citizen

Through the UNESCO Green Citizens campaign and the expertise of UNESCO, the Organisation wishes to inform the public, and highlight and support local, innovative and replicable citizen projects that have a notable impact on their respective communities and thus stimulate the spread of new ideas for global change.

The project reflects the conviction that changes in our relationship with living ecosystems will only be possible by bringing together the complementary actions of different stakeholders at all levels and by strengthening networks of committed people and organisations. UNESCO Green Citizens is also a call to decision-makers to act quickly and a reminder that only together can we achieve the necessary changes.

UNESCO has launched the UNESCO Green Citizens initiative to amplify the voice of some 145 local citizen projects around the world in UNESCO’s five key fields of sustainability: Biodiversity, Education for Sustainable Development, Hydrology, Indigenous and Local Knowledge, and the Ocean.

UNESCO has seen a great increase in the number and relevance of local citizen projects over the decades of scientific research on biodiversity, oceanography and hydrology, and conservation work in its protected sites around the world (biosphere reserves, geoparks, natural World Heritage sites). The UNESCO Green Citizens platform already has over 145 inspiring projects across 64 countries, with 50% of projects led by women, 78% involving young people and more than 20% initiated on the African continent. The campaign is a collective effort with the Klorane Botanical Foundation as our founding partner.
