Survey on most popular dishes and beverages among international tourists

• Popularity of international dishes may vary by region and culture

Alianza Kairo in collaboration with the company GastroCoolk, has carried out a study on the gastronomic preferences of international travellers and tourists in different countries, taking into consideration questions such as whether the tourist has chosen the destination for its gastronomy, knowledge of the local gastronomy they are visiting, or simply what their list of international dishes is.

The survey was conducted with a total of 15,000 international tourists in major hotels in cities in Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay from January to February 2023, and in cities in the United States of America, France, Spain, Italy, Israel and Mexico from May to July.

It should be borne in mind that preferences may vary according to region and culture, and these lists are representative in general terms, due to particularities such as tourist origin, age, religion, etc.

The relationship between gastronomy and tourism is deep and significant. Food and drink are essential elements of the culture of any place, and gastronomy has become an important attraction for tourists seeking authentic and enriching experiences on their travels. The quality and reputation of a place's cuisine can influence the overall perception of the destination and the decision of tourists to visit.

Gastronomy has become increasingly important in the choice of tourist destinations for many people. As tourism evolves into an experience more focused on the search for authenticity and cultural connections, food and drink have become decisive factors in choosing a destination. Here are some reasons why gastronomy plays an important role in the choice of tourist destinations.

Tourists are looking for authentic experiences that allow them to connect with the local culture. Food is a direct way to experience the daily life and tradition of a place, and is a window into the culture of a region. Dishes, ingredients and culinary techniques can reveal much about the history, traditions and values of a community.

Food and drink stimulate the senses of taste and smell in a unique way. Local flavours and aromas can leave lasting memories in the minds of tourists. Shared meals in a destination can create memories and deep emotional connections, making the trip more meaningful.

Eating in local restaurants and markets can provide tourists with a more authentic and genuine experience of a destination compared to eating in international chain restaurants.

Similarly, the food and tourism industry creates employment in a wide range of areas, from agriculture and fishing to hospitality and catering while promoting local products. Local dishes and drinks can highlight unique ingredients and regional products, fostering local economic development and the preservation of culinary traditions.

Another important activity in destination promotion is food events and festivals. These activities focus on food and drink, and include tastings, cooking competitions and chef presentations.

Another type of tourism that is highly developed in some destinations is wine tourism, where tourists visit vineyards, wineries and wine regions to taste wines and learn about the production process.

One of the conclusions of this study is that there is a common denominator among tourists in relation to their knowledge of international dishes. When asked about the 10 international dishes that are generally widely recognised and enjoyed around the world, they stand out:

1. Pizza: An Italian dish consisting of a baked dough base topped with tomato sauce, cheese and a variety of toppings.

2. Sushi: A Japanese delicacy consisting of rice seasoned with vinegar, fresh fish and other ingredients, rolled in seaweed.

3. Hamburger: An American fast food icon, consisting of grilled or fried hamburger meat, served on a bun with a variety of toppings.

4. Tacos: Originating in Mexico, tacos are corn or flour tortillas filled with meat, vegetables, salsa and other ingredients.

5. Paella: A Spanish dish of rice seasoned with saffron and cooked with a mixture of seafood, meat, vegetables and spices.

6. Curry: A general term for a variety of spicy and hot sauce dishes originating in India, often including meat, fish or vegetables.

7. Pasta: A staple of Italian cuisine, including a variety of pasta shapes (such as spaghetti, rigatoni, fettuccine) served with various sauces.

8. Miso soup: A Japanese soup made with miso broth (fermented soybean paste), tofu, seaweed and other ingredients.

9. Dim Sum: A style of Chinese food consisting of small assorted dishes such as dumplings, dumplings, dumplings and buns, usually served in bamboo baskets.

10. Croissant: A French pastry made of puff pastry that is baked until golden brown and crisp, and can be filled with chocolate, cheese or simply enjoyed on its own.

In terms of the top 10 most popular international beverages among tourists, the most popular preferences stand out:

1. Beer: An alcoholic beverage widely consumed around the world, with a wide variety of styles and flavours reflecting local cultures.

2. Wine: Wine is highly prized in many regions, such as France, Italy, Spain and more, where tourists enjoy tasting local wines and exploring wineries.

3. Tropical cocktails: In beach and holiday destinations, tourists often enjoy tropical cocktails such as pina coladas, mojitos and margaritas.

4. Caipirinha: Originating in Brazil, this drink is made from cachaça (a liqueur distilled from sugar cane), lime and sugar, and is especially popular with visitors.

5. Sangria: A Spanish drink combining red wine, fruit and often a touch of liqueur, very common in tourist areas.

6. Tea: In destinations such as Morocco, India and Asian countries, tea is a traditional drink that tourists enjoy in tea shops and local markets.

7. Coffee: In cities famous for their coffee, such as Vienna, Rome and Istanbul, tourists often seek out local coffee shops to try different types of coffee.

8. Sake: A Japanese fermented rice drink, which tourists often try in Japanese restaurants and bars around the world.

9. Pisco Sour: A Peruvian and Chilean drink made with pisco (grape brandy), lemon juice, sugar and egg white, which is popular with visitors.

10. Mojito: A Cuban cocktail made with rum, mint, sugar, lime and soda, which is found in many tourist places.

Finally, it is noteworthy that at some point in the interviews, respondents highlighted two drinks that are always present, either out of necessity or knowledge: water and milk.
