Repercussions of the call for change at UNWTO by former Secretaries General of the World Tourism Organization

13-03-25

The recent publication on the Tourism and Society Think Tank web platform of the open letter signed by the former Secretaries General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Francesco Frangialli and Taleb Rifai, has had a significant impact on the global tourism community. In the document, both leaders express their deep concern about the current state of the UNWTO and urgently call for a change of direction in its leadership, emphasising the need for transparency, ethics and representativeness in the institution.

The letter, which has been widely shared and discussed among tourism ministers, industry leaders and international governance experts, highlights the problems of legitimacy and management within the UNWTO under the administration of Zurab Pololikashvili. According to the signatories, the organisation has lost its credibility, weakened institutionally and alienated several key countries from its structure, affecting its role as a global tourism body.
