The Alianza de Turismo Accesible is presented at FITUR'25
26-01-25
Within the framework of FITUR 2025, one of the most influential events in the global tourism industry, a momentous step towards more inclusive, equitable and sustainable tourism has been taken with the official launch of the Alianza de Turismo Accessible (ATACC). This innovative initiative, driven by Tourism Society Think Tank (TSTT), seeks to transform the way people with disabilities and diverse needs experience travel, promoting an ecosystem where inclusion and accessibility are fundamental pillars of international tourism development.
The launch of ATACC brought together prominent tourism industry leaders, government representatives, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academic experts and private companies, all committed to building a truly accessible tourism. During the presentation, led by Stephanie Sheehy, General Director of the Alliance and founder of the Costa Rican Network of Accessible Tourism, the urgency of establishing global strategies to eliminate barriers and generate equal opportunities for all people, regardless of their abilities, was emphasized.
ATACC was born from the need to consolidate efforts worldwide to ensure that tourism is accessible to all. It is not just a matter of complying with regulations, but of generating a real change in the industry's mentality. We want to support existing projects that can be replicated and encourage the creation of a unified system of certification and verification of accessibility, allowing us all to speak the same language in terms of inclusion and equity,” said Sheehy.
ATACC's strategic pillars
The Alianza de Turismo Accessible is structured around five key strategic pillars:
Global collaboration: promoting synergies between the public and private sectors, as well as with NGOs and local communities, to advance inclusive policies and practices in tourism.
Education and awareness: develop training programs aimed at industry professionals to ensure adequate and sensitive service to the needs of all travelers.
Technological innovation: implement digital tools and innovative solutions that facilitate the travel experience for people with physical, sensory and cognitive disabilities.
Certification and continuous improvement: establish global accessibility standards and certifications that enable destinations and suppliers to guarantee optimal conditions for all tourists.
Inclusive sustainability: integrate accessibility as an essential part of tourism sustainability, ensuring that inclusion is a key element in the planning and management of destinations.
Concrete progress and immediate action
At the launch event, the first concrete actions of ATACC were announced, highlighting the appointment of national coordinators in Ecuador and Brazil, who will be responsible for leading and implementing inclusive strategies in their respective countries. This step marks the beginning of a global movement that seeks to transform accessible tourism in a tangible and effective way.
An initial action plan was also presented, which includes the creation of a digital platform of knowledge and resources on accessible tourism, as well as the organization of international meetings to share best practices and foster cross-sector collaboration.
During his speech, Sheehy urged all industry players to join this global initiative, stressing the importance of collective action to make a real impact:
“There is a gap between theory and practice, between organizations, companies and countries. With ATACC we want to close that gap through transparency, knowledge sharing and the creation of a common framework that allows us to move together towards universal accessibility. This is not just a declaration of intent, it is a commitment to action. We need to join forces, raise awareness and generate initiatives that will truly change the travel experience for millions of people around the world. It's time to act!”
ATACC is emerging as a global platform for action and collaboration that works together with international institutions and strategic partners to develop concrete initiatives that positively impact tourism destinations. Its innovative approach and long-term vision will accelerate the process towards universal accessibility in tourism, ensuring that diversity and equity are central values in the evolution of the sector.
