In India, more than 60% of domestic tourism is linked to religious travel, according to a recent report by the Punjab, Haryana and Delhi Chamber of Commerce. Uttar Pradesh, home to sacred sites such as Ayodhya, Braj, Mathura, Barsana, Nandgaon and Govardhan, stands out as a hub for such tourism. The Maha Kumbh Mela celebration at Prayagraj, held every 12 years, is a notable example of the magnitude of these events, attracting millions of devotees seeking to purify their sins through ritual baths at the confluence of the holy rivers Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati.
The Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has implemented various initiatives to improve infrastructure and beautify the areas surrounding these religious sites. Flagship projects such as the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi have transformed the experience of pilgrims by facilitating access and improving facilities. Since its inauguration, this corridor has attracted millions of visitors annually, cementing Varanasi as a premier spiritual destination.
The construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, scheduled for completion in 2025, is another significant project that is expected to boost religious tourism in the region. Ayodhya, considered the birthplace of Lord Ram, is undergoing accelerated development with multiple projects underway that seek to improve the city's infrastructure and connectivity.
Festive events such as Deepotsav in Ayodhya and Dev Deepawali in Varanasi not only celebrate the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region, but also attract a significant number of tourists. These celebrations have gained national and international recognition, contributing to the increase in tourist flow and thus to the economic growth of the state.
The importance of religious tourism in Uttar Pradesh is not only reflected in economic terms, but also in the promotion of the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region. The massive influx of pilgrims and tourists to these sacred sites underscores the need to continue investing in infrastructure, security and quality services to ensure an enriching experience for all visitors.
