19 million Americans to opt for cruises in 2025

The American Automobile Association (AAA) has announced that 19 million Americans are expected to choose cruising as their vacation option in 2025, representing a 4.5% increase from the 18.2 million recorded in 2024. This growth marks the third consecutive year of record numbers for the cruise industry, underscoring a remarkable recovery following the challenges imposed by the 2020 pandemic.

Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel, commented, “What we are witnessing in the cruise industry is astounding, but not surprising. There is a reason why most first-time passengers become repeat cruisers. Cruise vacations offer something for everyone, regardless of age. And since most vacations are already paid for, travelers can concentrate on enjoying themselves and creating unforgettable memories with their loved ones.”

The cruise industry, which was one of the hardest hit during the 2020 pandemic, has shown an impressive recovery. In 2022, cruise volume rebounded to 84% of the 2019 level, then increased to a new high in 2023, nearly 20% above the pre-pandemic baseline. That figure has continued to rise since then, and 2025 is projected to outpace 2019 by 34%.

The Caribbean remains the destination of choice, attracting 72% of U.S. cruisers in 2025. Destinations such as Alaska and the Mediterranean are also popular, capturing 6% and 5% of travelers, respectively. This preference for the Caribbean is consistent with pre-pandemic trends, although there has been an increase in the popularity of shorter cruises in this region. While most itineraries last 6-8 days, 18% of Caribbean cruises in 2025 are 2-5 days in length, compared to only 2% in 2023.

Florida stands out as the epicenter of cruise activities, hosting the three busiest ports in the world: Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale. Miami welcomed the world's largest cruise ship with the debut of Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas last year, and this summer, Port Canaveral will welcome Star of the Seas, Icon's sister ship.

For those planning to embark on a cruise this year, AAA Travel offers recommendations to ensure a smooth experience. It is suggested to book activities in advance, such as excursions, special dinners or spa treatments, as they tend to sell out quickly. In addition, it is advisable to arrive in the embarkation city one or two days prior to cruise departure to mitigate possible flight delays and take advantage of the opportunity to explore the departure city. It is also recommended to download the cruise line's mobile app to facilitate check-in, review itineraries and access other useful functionalities during the voyage.

The growing popularity of cruises is attributed to the diversity of options and amenities they offer, adapting to a wide range of preferences and budgets. From family trips to romantic getaways, cruises provide an all-inclusive experience that combines accommodation, entertainment and dining in a single package. This value proposition has especially resonated in a post-pandemic context, where travelers are looking for safe, convenient and enriching options.

In addition, the industry has implemented rigorous health and safety protocols to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew, which has helped restore consumer confidence. These measures, along with flexible booking and cancellation policies, have made cruising an attractive option for those seeking peace of mind in their travel plans.

Innovation has also played a crucial role in revitalizing the industry. Cruise lines have introduced new routes, onboard experiences and technological enhancements to appeal to a broader clientele. From adventures in exotic destinations to themed cruises focused on specific interests such as dining, wellness or cultural exploration, the options are more varied than ever.
