The state of Florida has reached an unprecedented milestone in its tourism industry by welcoming 142.9 million visitors in 2024, an increase of 1.6% over the previous year. This achievement consolidates Florida as the destination of choice for both domestic and international tourists.
The fourth quarter of 2024 was particularly noteworthy, recording 33.1 million tourist arrivals, the highest number ever for this period. Of these visitors, 29.9 million were domestic, 2.5 million from other countries and 742,000 from Canada.
Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his satisfaction with these results, stating: ‘The results are clear: Florida is the best place to visit, live and do business. Another record year proves that leadership matters and that Florida is a model for the nation.
Despite the challenges presented by Hurricanes Helene and Milton during the season, Florida's tourism industry demonstrated remarkable resilience. Hotel occupancy increased by 6.7 per cent in the fourth quarter, and total hotel nights sold grew by 1.6 per cent for the full year. In addition, the state's airports experienced sustained growth, with passenger numbers up 3.1% compared to 2023.
Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly noted, ‘Under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, Florida tourism continues to break records, overcoming the challenges of the hurricane season, driving economic growth and improving the quality of life in our communities.’
Breaking down the 2024 figures, 130.7 million visitors were domestic, an increase of 1.3 per cent over the previous year. International tourists totalled 8.9 million, an increase of 6.6 per cent and the closest figure to full recovery since 2019. Meanwhile, 3.3 million visitors came from Canada, representing an increase of 1.2%. In percentage terms, 91.5% of tourists were domestic, 6.2% international and 2.3% Canadian.
Growth in air traffic was also notable. Florida's 19 major airports reported a 3.1 per cent increase in passenger numbers, with significant increases at airports such as Tallahassee, Panama City and Pensacola.
This tourism success not only bolsters the state's economy, but also underscores the effectiveness of the strategies implemented to attract a wide range of visitors. Florida's diversity of attractions, from its world-renowned beaches to its theme parks and nature preserves, continues to be a magnet for tourists from far and wide.
In addition, the state's infrastructure has been key to handling this record volume of visitors. Improvements to airport facilities and the expansion of accommodation options have contributed to a high quality tourism experience.
The resilience demonstrated by Florida's tourism industry in the face of climatic and economic challenges is a testament to its strength and adaptability. Recovery and promotion initiatives have been instrumental in maintaining and increasing the flow of visitors.
Looking ahead, Florida is poised to continue this positive trend. With continued investments in tourism infrastructure and the promotion of new attractions, the state is well positioned to surpass these records in the coming years.
