In 2024, Africa experienced a significant increase in its tourism sector, welcoming 74 million international visitors. This growth represents a 7% increase compared to 2019 and a 12% rise from 2023, according to the latest World Tourism Barometer by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This expansion occurs within a global context where international tourism reached 1.4 billion travelers, recovering 99% of pre-pandemic levels from 2019. The rebound was driven by strong post-pandemic demand, the solid performance of key outbound markets, and the ongoing recovery of destinations in Asia and the Pacific.

The rise in tourist arrivals in Africa has had a positive impact on the continent’s economy. International tourism revenues reached $1.6 trillion in 2024, marking a 3% increase from 2023 and a 4% increase from 2019, adjusted for inflation and exchange rate fluctuations. This revenue growth reflects not only the higher number of visitors but also an increase in average spending per tourist, indicating an improvement in the tourism offering and Africa’s perception as a travel destination.
