The impact of Trump's tariffs on Asian travel and economy
07-04-25
The recent imposition of tariffs by President Donald Trump has generated considerable unrest in Asian economies, affecting various sectors, including tourism. These protectionist measures have triggered mixed responses in the region, with concerns about trade and economic stability.
China, as the main target of these tariffs, has responded strongly, calling the US actions ‘unilateralism and bullying’. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has emphasised that there are no winners in a trade war and has announced retaliatory tariffs of its own on US goods. This escalation of tensions could significantly affect the flow of travellers between the two nations, as trade restrictions often influence consumers' travel decisions.
For its part, the European Union has also expressed its displeasure. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the tariffs as a ‘significant blow to the global economy’ and has indicated that the EU is prepared to respond with proportionate measures. France has suggested the possibility of imposing taxes on US tech giants in retaliation. These tensions could deter European travellers from visiting the US, negatively affecting the tourism sector.
