G20 Tourism in Brazil: Resilient tourism and opportunities in Jamaica

21-09-24

The G20 tourism ministers' meeting in Brazil, led by Edmund Bartlett of Jamaica, highlighted the need for international support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), whose economies depend on tourism. Bartlett called for the creation of a global fund for tourism development and the promotion of sustainable practices in these destinations that are vulnerable to climate crises. He also emphasized future opportunities for Jamaica, such as its growing collaboration with India, which could attract new investment and diversify its tourism industry beyond the U.S. market.

This meeting highlighted the importance of tourism resilience through international cooperation, the promotion of sustainable tourism and the strengthening of small and medium-sized enterprises in SIDS. Bartlett underscored the crucial role of the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC) in preparing these destinations for future crises.

On this occasion, Jamaica and India discussed possible collaboration, creating opportunities potentially worth US$1 billion, focused on increasing the flow of tourists and high-end events such as Indian weddings.

The meeting also promoted improved connectivity for the island nations, a key to attracting more tourists. The proposal to simplify visa processes and reduce travel barriers was central to Bartlett, who noted that the G20 could be supportive in these areas.

In addition, the preservation of cultural heritage and the creation of diversified tourism products were seen as essential strategies for sustainable growth. Jamaica seeks to position itself as a benchmark in tourism innovation and resilience, through strategic partnerships that drive the country's economic and cultural development.

The impact of the climate crisis and economic volatility on SIDS makes the solutions discussed at the G20 vitally important, setting a path towards more equitable and resilient tourism.
