Transformations in global tourism: key trends for 2025

19-11-24

The global travel industry is in a phase of significant transformation, driven by changes in traveler preferences, technological advances and the post-pandemic recovery. The WTM Global Travel Report 2024, produced in collaboration with Tourism Economics, a subsidiary of Oxford Economics, highlights the trends that will define the tourism landscape by 2025.

After years of domestic tourism dominance due to global constraints, international tourism is expected to grow by 12% in the coming years, outpacing the modest 3% forecast for local tourism. Short-haul destinations are leading this recovery, while long-haul travel is beginning to gain ground again, signaling the return of key markets that had been constrained post-pandemic.

Business tourism resurgence and bleisure boom

Business tourism, one of the segments hardest hit during the pandemic, is showing a remarkable recovery. Events such as congresses, trade fairs and corporate meetings (MICE) are driving this revival, along with a growing integration of the concept of 'bleisure', which combines leisure and business. This hybrid approach reflects a shift in the preferences of travelers, who are seeking more holistic travel experiences.

Expansion of the cruise and lodging sector

The cruise sector continues to expand, with a 25% increase in global capacity projected by the end of 2026 compared to 2019 levels. This growth ranges from mega-ships with capacity for more than 4,500 passengers to smaller, more exclusive vessels. On the accommodation side, hotel spending is projected to grow by 63% over the next decade, outpacing the 48% increase seen over the past 10 years. Tourist rentals are also consolidating, already representing 20% of overnight stays in Europe, driven by platforms such as Airbnb.

Technology and artificial intelligence in travel planning

Technology is transforming the way travelers plan and enjoy their experiences. Significantly, 51% of 18-34 year olds use tools such as ChatGPT to search for information and organize their trips. In addition, 71% of experts believe that technologies such as artificial intelligence will play a central role in the success of tourism. This trend underscores the importance of companies in the sector adopting technological solutions to remain competitive and meet the expectations of a new generation of travelers.

Focus on sustainability and cultural experiences

Although concern for the environment continues to grow, the transition to sustainable practices is still limited. While 83% of respondents consider sustainable tourism important, only 57% plan to reduce their energy consumption during their next trip. On the other hand, cultural experiences are gaining prominence, especially among Generation Z and millennials. Some 92% show greater interest in local cuisine, while 88% are looking to interact with local residents. These preferences are driving demand for destinations and activities that offer authenticity and cultural connection.

Challenges and opportunities for the sector

The report also highlights challenges such as the need to adapt to changing traveler expectations, the integration of emerging technologies and the implementation of sustainable practices. However, these areas also represent opportunities to innovate and differentiate in a competitive market. Companies that balance technology adoption with offering authentic and sustainable experiences will be better positioned to thrive in the future of tourism.

In summary, the tourism landscape toward 2025 will be marked by a recovery in international tourism, the evolution of business tourism toward more integrated models, the expansion of sectors such as cruises and lodging, and a growing influence of technology and sustainability on travelers' decisions. Adapting to these trends will be key for tourism businesses and destinations to remain relevant and competitive in the coming years.
