The Sociedad Mercantil Estatal para la Gestión de la Innovación y las Tecnologías Turísticas (Segittur) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) have announced the creation of the Community of Practice for Smart Tourism Destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean. This initiative seeks to strengthen tourism management in the region through the adoption of the Smart Tourism Destinations (ITD) model, promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing among professionals in the sector.
Tourism plays a crucial role in the economic and social development of Latin America and the Caribbean. The natural and cultural wealth of these countries positions them as attractive destinations worldwide. However, competitiveness in the tourism sector requires constant adaptation to new technologies and global trends. In this context, the DTI model offers a comprehensive framework that addresses current challenges, focusing on five fundamental pillars: governance, sustainability, accessibility, technology and innovation.
The Community of Practice is established as a meeting and collaboration space for managers and experts from tourism administrations in the region interested in deepening their understanding of the DTI model. To date, more than 100 tourism professionals and representatives of tourism institutions from different countries have expressed their interest in participating. This forum will allow for an ongoing dialogue on the future of tourism, the challenges facing the sector and emerging opportunities in a constantly changing environment.
Among the main objectives of the Community of Practice are:
Strengthen the capabilities of public managers through specialized training in the DTI model.
Provide access to key resources, such as documents, working groups, webinars and expert conferences, to facilitate the adoption of the model in the region.
Consolidate as a reference repository for storing and disseminating knowledge and experiences related to ITD.
Facilitate the exchange of best practices among destinations, identifying specific contributions and needs of the ITD management model for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Foster a network of collaboration between destination managers and tourism institutions, promoting synergies and joint projects.
The implementation of the DTI model in the region promises significant benefits. By integrating technology and innovation into tourism management, destinations can improve the visitor experience, optimize resources and promote sustainable practices. In addition, smart tourism management contributes to the preservation of cultural and natural heritage, ensuring that tourism development is balanced and beneficial to local communities.
The collaboration between Segittur and AECID in this initiative reflects Spain's commitment to sustainable tourism development in Latin America and the Caribbean. Spain, recognized for its leadership in the implementation of ITD, brings its experience and knowledge to support destinations in the region in their transformation towards more efficient and sustainable models.
The creation of the Community of Practice for Smart Tourism Destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean marks a milestone in international cooperation in tourism. By promoting the adoption of the ITD model, it lays the foundation for more resilient, inclusive and sustainable tourism in the region. Managers and professionals in the sector now have a platform to share experiences, learn from success stories and collaborate in building destinations that respond to the demands of the modern tourist, without compromising the cultural and environmental values that make them unique.
The Community of Practice is emerging as an essential tool for the modernization and competitiveness of tourism in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through training, knowledge sharing and collaboration, destinations in the region will be able to successfully face current and future challenges, positioning themselves as leaders in the implementation of smart and sustainable tourism models.
