The Council of the European Union (EU) has agreed to incorporate the member states of Bulgaria and Romania into the so-called Schengen Agreement, thus eliminating border controls for passengers on air and sea routes coming from other states framed in the so-called Schengen area.

With the incorporation of both countries, the total number of European nations that are part of this free movement of people treaty rises to 29: 25 of the 27 EU member states, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

According to the high community institution, the decision has been made unanimously after a written procedure. This date corresponds to the winter/summer time change marked by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This measure means that both EU citizens and third-country citizens residing in the EU or visiting the Member States as tourists, exchange students or on business will also be able to enter both Eastern European countries by air or sea without passing through. border controls.
