Fears over Red Sea situation benefit cruise tourism in the Caribbean

Continued fears over violence in the Red Sea forced Virgin Voyages to divert its upcoming Resilient Lady repositioning voyages from Australia to Athens. Now, the shipping line is canceling all of its plans for the 2024/25 season, which included a second season in Australia.

"Following these recent changes and based on the regional and governmental advice we have received, we remain very concerned about potential escalations in the Red Sea over the next 12 months," the line said in a statement. "This significant and ongoing conflict places unacceptable risks to safe passage through the region for our seafarers, crew and vessel (Resilient Lady)."

The vessel will now end its Mediterranean sailing season on October 20 and, instead of setting sail back to Australia, will divert to San Juan, Puerto Rico for a new season in the Caribbean. The new program will include seven-, eight-, 10- and 11-night sailings through St. Maarten, St. Vincent, Colombia and Dominica.

Virgin Voyages is still preparing the ship's repositioning route from Athens to San Juan, but plans to offer sailings to ports such as Catania, Casablanca and Tenerife.

"To say we are disappointed to have come to this harsh conclusion is an understatement. These adjustments are occurring now to minimize potential future disruptions to our passengers' vacation plans, knowing that changes will most likely have to be made in the future."

Affected cruisers have the option to rebook another voyage or opt for a full refund. These passengers will also be entitled to a cruise season in Australia in year 25 if Virgin Voyages deems it safe enough to return.
