Zanzibar implements compulsory insurance for tourists
14-08-24
From September 1, 2024, Zanzibar will introduce compulsory insurance for all tourists visiting the island, at a cost of $44. This new measure seeks to offer comprehensive protection to visitors during their stay, covering a wide range of eventualities such as health problems, lost luggage, accidents, emergency evacuations and loss of passport. The insurance has a duration of up to 92 days, allowing tourists to enjoy their visit with greater peace of mind, knowing that they will be covered for any unforeseen eventuality.
Zanzibar's Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Saada Mkuya Salum, announced that this measure aims not only to protect tourists, but also to strengthen confidence in Zanzibar as a safe and secure destination ready to welcome international visitors. The introduction of this mandatory insurance could have an impact on the island's tourism industry, as travel agencies and tour operators will have to adjust their packages to include this fee, which could affect pricing structures.
