MSC Cruises reduces emissions with new itinerary planning tool
08-08-24
MSC Cruises has launched OptiCruise, an advanced itinerary planning tool that will reduce CO2 emissions from its fleet by 15% by 2026. This development is part of its commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The technology, created in collaboration with OPTIMeasy and funded by the European Union under the CHEK project, uses a mathematical model to optimize routes, minimizing fuel consumption and maximizing operational efficiency without sacrificing passenger experience.
Itinerary planning in the cruise industry has traditionally focused on attracting tourist destinations, but OptiCruise introduces a broader view by considering multiple factors: sequence of calls, schedules, ship speed, excursions and operating costs (fuel, port fees, food). This not only maintains customer satisfaction but also improves energy efficiency and reduces costs.
The tool has been successfully tested for 12 months on the MSC Bellissima, covering 17 ports in the Mediterranean. The results showed a significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions, anticipating an average saving of 10-15%.
The use of OptiCruise falls within MSC's sustainability strategy, which is based on three main pillars:
Ship and engine technology: Implementation of more efficient engines and advanced technologies.
Operational efficiency: Continuous improvement of energy efficiency through digitization and process optimization, where OptiCruise plays a crucial role.
Renewable fuels: Transition to low-emission fuels to power the fleet.
MSC Cruises joins an international consortium under the leadership of the University of Vaasa in Finland, which includes the World Maritime University, Wärtsilä, Cargill and Lloyds Register, among others. This consortium explores innovative solutions and low-emission technologies in shipping, seeking a more sustainable industry.
The implementation of OptiCruise is aligned with the European Union's Horizon 2020 program, which promotes research and development of sustainable technologies. Michele Francioni, MSC Cruises' Director of Energy Transition, highlights the importance of this tool in achieving the company's environmental goals.
The adoption of tools such as OptiCruise not only benefits MSC Cruises but also sets a precedent in the cruise industry, promoting sustainable practices and carbon footprint reduction. The initiative reinforces the company's commitment to environmental protection and long-term sustainability, contributing significantly to the fight against climate change.
