Emerging technology and tourism: key debates at WTM

13-08-24

At the upcoming World Travel Market (WTM) Ministers' Summit, in partnership with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), more than 50 global tourism leaders will discuss the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies on the travel industry. This event, to be held on November 6, will address how these innovations can enhance the traveler experience and optimize operational processes, all within an ethical framework.

The discussion will also explore the importance of ensuring equitable access to technology to avoid deepening socioeconomic disparities. A central point will be how to bridge the digital divide so that all stakeholders, regardless of their resources, can benefit from technological advances. This approach is aligned with the sustainable development goals promoted by the UN.

The event, now in its 18th edition, will be held in the context of WTM's TravelPower campaign, which seeks to show how the travel industry can be a driver of positive change. According to Juliette Losardo, Exhibition Director of WTM London, the summit is the world's largest annual gathering of tourism ministers and plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the industry through dialogue and finding solutions to key challenges.

The debate on the impact of AI on tourism is not new, but the summit will provide a unique platform to discuss these issues at the highest level, with the intention of guiding the sector towards a future where technology drives more personalized and sustainable experiences.

UNWTO and WTTC are at the forefront of innovation in tourism, supporting startups and promoting more focused and effective investments in the sector. The summit will also focus on how new technologies can improve sustainability and operational efficiency, while ensuring that technological progress leaves no community behind.

The WTM Ministers Summit will be a key event in defining how the travel industry can harness the power of emerging technology for the greater good, while addressing the ethical and social challenges involved in its implementation.
