Dominican Republic: inauguration of the Via Sacra in Higüey
31-08-24
On 13 September the Via Sacra will be inaugurated in Higüey, an emblematic project that seeks to promote religious tourism in the region. This boulevard not only represents a new tourist attraction, but also a boost for the local economy. The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, highlighted the importance of promoting the cultural and architectural richness of Higüey, beyond traditional destinations such as Bávaro and Punta Cana. The project includes the remodelling of the city's central park and is part of a broader strategy to diversify tourism in the province of La Altagracia, integrating the gastronomic and religious offerings.
The Via Sacra thus becomes a key point to attract tourists seeking spiritual and cultural experiences, inviting them to explore the Basilica and learn about the unique religious history of the area. This urban revitalisation effort, coordinated by the Ministry of Tourism, has also involved local authorities in making crucial decisions about traffic management and road infrastructure. In addition, the possibility of making the Via Sacra a one-way space has been raised, although this final decision rests with the municipal government.
The main objective of this project is to create a continuous flow of tourists to Higüey, which will contribute significantly to the economic development of the region. The commitment to religious and cultural tourism will not only diversify the tourism offer of the Dominican Republic, but will also strengthen the sense of local identity, promoting the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage.
The Via Sacra, with its improved design and focus on sustainability, seeks to be a model of how tourism can be integrated harmoniously with urban life and the natural environment. This approach will also be reflected in the future remodelling of the 15 de Agosto park, which will form part of the second phase of the project, improving the lighting and landscaping to make it a space that complements the Via Sacra experience.
The Ministry of Tourism will continue to work on the promotion of Higüey as an integral destination, where spirituality and culture combine to offer a unique experience to visitors. It is hoped that this project, along with other infrastructure and promotional efforts, will boost the local economy and put Higüey on the map as a reference destination for religious tourism in the Caribbean. With the inauguration of the Via Sacra, the Dominican Republic reinforces its commitment to sustainable tourism development, promoting culture and heritage as fundamental pillars of its tourism offer.
