Disney updates disability access policy

Disney has announced significant changes to its disability access policies following a study that revealed an increase in the use of the Disability Access Service (DAS) under questionable circumstances.

The DAS program, designed to ensure that people with disabilities enjoy theme parks safely and comfortably, has seen a tripling of its use over the past five years, often for reasons bordering on abuse of the system.

Advantages of the program include the ability to avoid long lines at attractions and register up to two companions with special needs. However, due to observed misuse, Disney has decided to implement a series of restrictive measures to preserve the integrity of the program.

Beginning May 20 at Disney World and June 18 at Disneyland Paris, the conditions of use of the DAS will undergo significant changes. Guests with disabilities will now be required to request access to the program at least 30 days in advance. In addition, "preferential queue returns" will be introduced at select attractions, allowing up to two reservations per day for those requiring frequent access to restrooms, among other needs.

Permit validity will also be extended to 30 days from the time of registration. To ensure compliance with the new policies, Disney has established severe penalties, including a permanent ban on access to its resorts for those who attempt to tamper with the system.

Despite the new restrictions, Disney is committed to continuing to offer a suite of services tailored to the needs of its guests with disabilities. This includes personalized attention via virtual video chat and support from health professionals to determine eligibility, without requiring extensive medical documentation, a policy that stands out favorably compared to other companies in the theme park industry.

With these changes, Disney seeks to balance accessibility with fair measures to prevent abuse, ensuring that the DAS program remains a valuable resource for those who truly need it.
