EU to vote on free carry-on baggage on planes in October

22-09-23

The European Parliament has decided to move forward on protecting passengers' rights by unanimously adopting a resolution that will require airlines to ensure that passengers can take a cabin bag free of charge on board planes.

The European Parliament's Petitions Committee has voted on a proposal that will be put to a vote in the October plenary session of the European Parliament. Although there is case law ruling that charging extra for cabin luggage is an unfair term, there are still many airlines - especially low-cost ones - that impose extra charges on passengers for this practice.

Another of the main points of this resolution is the harmonisation of the measurements and weight of hand luggage, with the aim that all airlines operating in the European Union (EU) use the same standards. This measure is especially relevant for those passengers taking connecting flights who have to fly on different airlines on the same day.

It should be remembered that in previous months, airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet and Vueling have been prosecuted for charging for hand luggage.
