Mexico is already the second largest medical tourism destination in the world, behind only Thailand. As reported in El País, Mexico receives 1.2 million foreign tourists who come to undergo medical treatments in dentistry, ophthalmology or cosmetic surgery, mainly. According to Euromonitor, these trips generate revenues of up to 3.9 billion dollars.
American customers account for 70% of this turnover, although tourists from other places such as France, Germany, Canada and Italy also come. They are attracted by the value for money, as treatments can be between 36% and 89% cheaper than in their home country.
The pie is shared between the vast majority of Mexican states, including those bordering the United States, its main source market, but also the tourist states: Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Yucatán.
