New York City Tourism + Conventions, the official destination marketing and convention and visitors bureau for the five boroughs invites visitors and locals to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop in the official birthplace of hip-hop, New York City.
This genre of music, now a global movement, has its roots in a Bronx party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue on August 11, 1973, hosted by DJ Kool Herc.
To celebrate this historic anniversary, NYC Tourism has partnered with Mass Appeal, the entertainment company behind the Hip Hop 50, to support key events throughout New York City, and has launched specific content dedicated to hip-hop on the NYC Tourism website.
The hub features an interactive map of hip-hop experiences in the five boroughs; interviews, Q&As with local hip-hop fans; guides to hip-hop culture, history, shops, restaurants, murals (street art), tours and neighbourhoods; and a list of commemorative events and cultural exhibits throughout New York City.
NYC Tourism's interactive map, located towards the bottom of the hip-hop content hub, serves as a guide for visitors to plan hip-hop exploration in locations throughout the five boroughs.
The hub also features exclusive interviews with Ralph McDaniels, creator of Video Music Box; Rocky Bucano, founder of the Universal Hip Hop Museum (scheduled to open in 2025); and Debra Harris, founder of Hush Hip Hop Tours.
NYC Tourism has also designed an additional map that will be displayed in media throughout New York City, highlighting the names of personalities and places that contributed to hip-hop history over the past 50 years.
The organisation has partnered with Mass Appeal to support events throughout New York City through a multimedia campaign, including Hip Hop 50 Live at Yankee Stadium on August 11, the official birth date of the genre.
