The Official College of Aeronautical Engineers (Coiae) has prepared a report analyzing the environmental efficiency of restricting domestic flights in favor of rail transport in Spain.

This report will be presented next Monday, December 11 at the III Climate Summit in the sector, where more than 20 experts and heads of companies, universities and institutions will discuss the main challenges facing the aeronautical sector to guide air transport towards environmental efficiency.

Thus, the dean of the Coiae, José Manuel Hesse, will present at the opening of the conference the report Short Flights 2022, with updated data of the flights made in 2022.

The aim of this report is to analyze the possible environmental efficiency of restrictive measures to domestic flights in favor of high-speed rail transport in Spain. It studies air journeys with rail alternatives of less than three and four hours.

The Climate Summit conference is organized by the Coiae with the collaboration of the Airline Association (ALA) and the School of Aeronautical and Space Engineering (ETSIAE) of the UPM. It will consist of four round tables.

The first of them will address sustainability as the main challenge of aviation. Participants will include the president of ALA, Javier Gándara; the general director of AENA Airports, Elena Mayoral; the general director of Enaire, Enrique Maurer, and the general director of Civil Aviation, David Benito.

"Fit for 55: Ready for the reduction of CO2 emissions?" will be the title of the second topic of debate. It will include the participation of the head of business development Boeing Research & Technology Europe, Beatriz Ventero Peña; the director of sustainability of AENA, Ana Salazar, and Marina García IAG Group Sustainability Insights.

The third roundtable will address sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as the immediate solution to achieve net zero emissions. Participants will include Repsol's international aviation director Oliver Fernández; the head of ITP UltraFan and Decarbonisation Projects, Abel Jiménez; Vueling's head of sustainability, Franc Sanmartí, and the director of Transport & Environment in Spain, Isabell Büschel.

Hydrogen and electricity as alternative propulsion systems will be the last topic to be discussed. The Director of Airframe Engineering at Airbus, Susana Carballo; the Operations Director of Crisalion Mobility, Óscar Lara; the President of the Spanish Hydrogen Technology Platform PTeH2, Antonio González, and the Director of Sustainability of Iberia and spokesperson for All4Zero, Teresa Parejo Navajas, will intervene. The conclusions and closing will be in charge of the director of the ETSIAE, Cristina Cuerno.

The summit is free with prior registration at info@coiae.es , and will be of a mixed nature, so it can be followed both in person and via streaming.
