Hotels and restaurants closed in Acapulco two months after Hurricane Otis

Acapulco (state of Guerrero, Mexico) has experienced a rather gloomy Christmas. Hurricane Otis hit several businesses in the tourism sector hard as it passed through in October. Numerous hotels and restaurants remain closed and some of them are still practically in ruins.

According to local media, in fact, only four hotels have been able to open during this month of December. However, they have done so at low capacity, some of them at 30%. Others have not been so lucky. An example of this is the Elcano hotel, which has already announced its closure and the dismissal of a hundred workers.

Some experts predict numerous closures in Acapulco in the coming months, when public aid runs out. For his part, the president of the Council of Industrial and Business Chambers of Guerrero, Julián Urióstegui, has warned that if micro, small and medium-sized companies are not supported, some 35,000 formal jobs could be destroyed and another 40,000 informal ones.

"The industry does not want to be given away, but rather to be given facilities, but everything is related, it is a symbiosis: if they do not open, Acapulqueños will not be able to work," said tourism businessman Guido Rentería.
