The report by the international consultancy firm Alianza Kairo and Bufete España Abogados has been presented.
This report, led by the prestigious lawyer Mr. Felix J. España, specialised in matters of investment, taxation and international mobility, and Mr. Antonio Santos del Valle, was presented simultaneously in Miami - Florida (United States of America), Madrid (Spain) and Bogotá (Colombia), before representatives of study centres, companies and the press.
Until now, only those known as digital nomads (international teleworkers according to Spanish regulations) were considered, but it has been extended in time and form to many workers who have opted for this way of developing their professional activity in Spanish territory.
Tourism and teleworking are two concepts that have gained special relevance in recent times mainly due to the impulse it received during and post-covid, but also due to technological advances and changes in lifestyles and the world of work.
Remote work, also known as remote work or working from home, allows people to perform their work tasks outside the traditional office using technological tools such as laptops, internet and online communication. This work modality has allowed for greater flexibility in work schedules and location.
Although it is also a reality that when we travel we work, thanks to telecommuting, many people can work from any place with internet access. This concept has generated the trend known as "digital nomads", who are workers who choose to travel and live in different places while still fulfilling their work responsibilities. When people have the ability to work remotely, they can choose to travel and explore new destinations without having to worry about taking vacation days, potentially increasing tourism and benefiting local economies.
People who telecommute can also encourage a more sustainable approach to tourism. Instead of frequent short trips, some people may opt for longer stays at destinations, reducing the carbon footprint associated with constant travel.
However, there are challenges and considerations such as adapting to different time zones, connectivity issues, and maintaining a balance between work and travel enjoyment.
It is important to keep in mind that the feasibility of telecommuting while traveling can vary by industry, employer, and specific job tasks. In addition, each country's policies and regulations regarding the entry and work of foreigners should also be considered before embarking on a telework trip.
Teleworking has gained popularity due to various reasons that benefit both employees, employers and society at large. Some of the main reasons for the growth of telework are as follows:
Flexibility: Telework allows employees to have greater flexibility in their work schedules and work environments. They can adapt their working day to accommodate personal and family responsibilities, resulting in greater job satisfaction and a better work-life balance.
Increased productivity: For many people, working from home or anywhere with internet access can result in a quieter and less distracting environment than the traditional office, which can increase concentration and productivity.
Time and cost savings: By avoiding daily commutes to and from the office, employees can save time and money on transportation. In addition, employers can reduce the costs associated with maintaining a physical office space.
Access to global talent: remote work allows companies to hire employees from anywhere in the world, expanding their access to diverse talent and skills without geographic limitations.
Greater inclusion: remote work can benefit people with disabilities, physical limitations or mobility difficulties by providing them with an opportunity to participate in the workforce without the physical barriers they may encounter in a traditional office.
Emergency resilience: During crisis or emergency situations, such as pandemics or natural disasters, remote work can enable businesses to continue to function while protecting the health and safety of their employees.
Reduced carbon footprint: By reducing the daily commute, teleworking helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and therefore has a positive impact on the environment.
Improved job satisfaction: Employees who are able to enjoy greater flexibility and autonomy in their work tend to feel more satisfied with their jobs, which in turn can improve talent retention and productivity.
