Mexico: more than $2.7 billion in direct investment in the first half of 2022

The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that from January to June 2022, Foreign Direct Tourism Investment (FDIT) registered 2 billion 779.3 million dollars, which represents a growth of 303.4% compared to the investment captured in the same period of 2021; equivalent to 10.1% of National Foreign Investment.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) indicated that based on the Foreign Direct Investment Registers of the Ministry of Economy, the FDIDI registered in the second quarter of 2022, amounts to 217.5 million dollars, being 31.4% away from reaching the investment captured in the same quarter of 2021, with a proportion equivalent to 3.0% of the Total FDI.

He pointed out that in the second quarter of 2022, the main countries that registered the highest flow of Foreign Direct Investment in Tourism were the United States with 160.9 million dollars, that is 74% of the total; Canada, 41.9 million dollars, representing 19.3% of the total; and Colombia, 7.5 million dollars, 3.5% of the total.

He pointed out that the entities that captured the highest flow of Foreign Direct Tourism Investment during this period were: Baja California Sur, 93.3 million dollars, or 42.9% of the total; Jalisco, 32.4 million dollars, representing 14.9% of the total; Quintana Roo, 29.1 million dollars, 13.4% of the total; Nayarit, 27.2 million dollars, or 12.5% of the total; and Mexico City, 12.3 million dollars, 5.6% of the total.

Torruco Marqués reported that from the first quarter of 1999 to the second quarter of 2022, an FDI flow of 28.39 billion dollars was recorded, with a percentage share of 4.2% of national foreign direct investment during that period.

He stressed that the category of flats and furnished houses with hotel services reflects the largest share with 15,839.9 billion dollars, representing 56.5% of total FDI, and hotels with other integrated services participate with 22.5%, that is, 6,321.1 billion dollars, and both account for a share of 79% of total FDI.
